A fire occurred at the Greendale DPW Recycling Center on June 15, 2024, due to improper disposal of items in a compactor container. The incident necessitated the emptying of the container and intervention by the Fire Department. Fortunately, no significant damage was reported.

The event underscores the importance of proper disposal practices at recycling centers. Visitors are urged to follow specific guidelines for disposing of various materials:

- Electronics should be placed in the E-Waste area.

- Large items like furniture belong in a designated bulk item section.

- Yard waste such as leaves and grass clippings should go to the Yard Waste section.

- Scrap metal must be disposed of in the Metal area.

- Flattened cardboard is to be recycled in its respective section.

- Organic waste and food scraps have specific bins for disposal.

- Gently used clothing can be donated via textile bins.

- Motor oil and antifreeze require special disposal areas.

- Appliances containing freon need designated spots for safe handling.

- Soil should be placed in a dedicated Dirt section.

- Common recyclables like paper and plastics belong in general recycling bins.

Proper disposal of batteries and chemicals is crucial as they pose fire risks when crushed. For hazardous materials, residents are advised to consult yard attendants or visit a Household Hazardous Waste site such as www.mmsd.com.

For any questions regarding item disposal, visitors can seek assistance from yard attendants. Cooperation is essential for maintaining safety and efficiency at the Recycling Center, preventing incidents similar to the recent fire.

"Thank you for your attention and adherence to these guidelines," states an official message. "Together, we can maintain a safe and effective recycling program for our community."
