In early 2022, the manufacturing industry is grappling with a significant labor shortage. By October 2021, employment in the sector had decreased by over 350,000 workers compared to pre-pandemic levels. This shortage has resulted in increased risks of injury, product liability, and damage for businesses.

Manufacturing jobs often occur indoors and in close quarters. The arrival of COVID-19 in the U.S. significantly impacted this space, contributing to employee turnover experienced by manufacturers.

The shortages are not solely due to COVID-19; retirements among baby boomers have also posed challenges across the industry. Many younger workers have shifted to sectors like technology and healthcare, leaving a gap as older employees retire.

Pandemic-related disruptions continue to affect staffing levels with no clear solutions in sight. Some firms report that vaccination requirements are leading to higher turnover rates, while others see minimal impact from these mandates. Child care interruptions have forced some parents out of work, and other employees may have left due to safety concerns or burnout during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, manufacturing has evolved with advanced technology such as co-bots working alongside human workers, which enhances productivity and safety. This technological shift requires higher education levels and new skills from factory floor workers and office staff alike, creating barriers for those lacking training or preparation.

Innovative companies like Allis Roller are seeking creative solutions to address this issue. "There is no magic wand solution but it takes hard work and a rededication to the local community," states Allis Roller about their efforts to find qualified employees. They have partnered with MATC in the past to promote manufacturing careers as part of closing the hiring gap gradually.
