The City of Greenfield has issued safety guidelines for this year's Halloween trick-or-treating. Residents are reminded to turn on their porch lights to signal participation in the event.
The city emphasizes several safety tips to ensure a safe experience for all participants. Young children should always be accompanied by an adult while trick-or-treating. It is advised never to go alone and to have at least two buddies accompany you. Planning your entire route and informing your family about it is also recommended.
Costumes should be flame retardant, and children are advised to wait until they get home before eating any candy, allowing parents to check it first. The city urges caution around strangers and advises accepting treats only at doorways, never inside homes.
Participants are encouraged to express gratitude for treats received and avoid playing near lit jack-o-lanterns. Trick-or-treaters should visit only houses with lights on, walk instead of running, use sidewalks or driveways, and cross streets at corners or in crosswalks.
