Oak Creek-Franklin School District (OCFSD) is working towards becoming a Special Olympics Unified Champion School in an initiative aimed at fostering social inclusion for all students. This effort promotes the integration of students with disabilities into various aspects of school life through the use of sports.

The Unified Champion Schools program rests on three core elements: inclusive sports, inclusive leadership, and whole-school engagement. These components collectively support students in promoting acceptance and inclusivity throughout school environments. Monica Church, Director of Student Services, and Scott Holler, Athletic Director at Oak Creek High School, are spearheading this initiative. According to Holler, “Sports teach us so many life lessons, including unity and the power of friendship.”

Church added, “This program has allowed student-athletes to become leaders on and off the field and has allowed athletes with special abilities to show their peers the unique talents they possess.”

OCFSD has started organizing recreational days to encourage interactions between students with disabilities and their peers. These events involve students participating in different sports, fostering meaningful relationships. Holler remarks on the importance of these activities, stating, “Our high school student-athletes don’t just play for the love of the game—they play to share that passion and inspire others with the joy they find in their sport.”

Looking ahead, Church mentions the district's plans for expansion, aiming for middle schools to follow Oak Creek High School's lead as unified champion schools. She notes, “This year OCHS held a UKnighted week to bring awareness to inclusive practices and self-awareness.”

With contributions from educators, coaches, and students, OCFSD is progressing towards establishing a school culture where inclusion and participation are central to every student's experience.
