City of West Allis recently issued the following announcement on March 23.

NOW HIRING SEASONAL EMPLOYEES  

Make the most of our gorgeous Wisconsin summers by working outdoors as a Temporary Seasonal Laborer with the West Allis Department of Public Works. These full-time seasonal positions offer great work hours ranging from spring to early fall. Learn more about municipal Public Works operations and gain new skills in customer service, landscaping, road painting, sanitation work, and more. These positions are open to anyone 18 years of age or older and are a perfect opportunity for students to gain meaningful summer employment and get a glimpse of what it takes to maintain a local municipality. Candidates must possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license. 

Up to $16/hour for new hires with additional incentives. West Allis Residents earn an additional 3.5%. Eligible for $300 bonus after 8 weeks. WISCONSIN HELP FOR HOMEOWNERS PROGRAM ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

Get help with overdue home bills. If you are finding it hard to make ends meet, Wisconsin Help for Homeowners is a new statewide program that can help with overdue bills such as your mortgage payment, property taxes, and utilities, including internet. The program is open to individuals and families who live in Wisconsin with overdue housing-related bills, both with and without a mortgage, and who have experienced a qualified economic hardship since January 21, 2020.    

If you are a homeowner and have been financially impacted, you may be eligible to apply. Visit www.homeownerhelp.wi.gov or call 1-855-2-HOME-WI (1-855-246-6394) to learn more. The Wisconsin Help for Homeowners program will provide $92 Million in federal funds as announced by Governor Tony Evers to help folks stay in their homes, catch up on bills, and avoid foreclosure.  

EMERGENCY RENTAL ASSISTANCE STILL AVAILABLE

The Wisconsin Emergency Rental Assistance Program (WERA) provides up to 18 months of assistance with current or overdue bills to help households. Specifically, to help households impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic avoid eviction. More than 25,000 Wisconsinites have already received help with rent, utilities, and internet or broadband statewide. Help is still available for eligible households. The program is funded by the Federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program and administered by the Wisconsin Department of Administration.

YOUTH COMMISSION VIRTUAL SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATE FORUM MARCH 29 

The West Allis Youth Commission will host a candidate forum with West Allis-West Milwaukee School Board Candidates on Tuesday, March 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Candidates will be responding to questions posed by Youth Commission members. Watch the forum live on the City’s YouTube channel, Spectrum cable channel 25, or AT&T U-verse channel 99. The forum will also be recorded for later viewing on the City’s YouTube channel and will replay on the City’s cable channel.

Make Sure You Know Where to Vote 

MyVote Wisconsin is your one-stop-shop for helpful election information. Please note that because of the 2020 Census, the wards in the City of West Allis have changed due to redistricting. This affects where you vote on election day. Please check MyVote Wisconsin for your voting location. Find all upcoming 2022 elections, including our next one on April 5:  

  • Spring Election - Tuesday, April 5 - Less than 2 weeks away 
  • Fall Primary - Tuesday, August 9 - If needed 
  • General / Gubernatorial Election - Tuesday, November 8
The Spring Election is held the first Tuesday in April for Court of Appeals Judge, Circuit Court Judge, County Nonpartisan Offices, Municipal Offices, School District Offices, and referenda (if necessary). Who Are My Elected Officials?

Find out what district you live in and who your alderpersons are by using MyVote Wisconsin. Select the My Voter Info tab and then type in your first name, last name, and date of birth to see who your elected officials are. For more information on your alderpersons, visit the City’s Common Council webpage. 

HANG TIGHT – YARD WASTE & BRUSH COLLECTION COMING 

The Department of Public Works wishes to remind the community that spring yard waste collection does not begin until April 17, and brush collection does not begin until May 9. With the intermittently nice weather, our staff recently noticed people starting to put yard waste in the curb line. Please know that this is not what you should do. Notices may be left at a property where there is yard waste in the street before April 17 or brush in the street at any time. 

Instead, the materials can always be brought to the Municipal Yard if you don’t wish to wait for these dates.

Apart from holidays, the Municipal Yard (City Dump) is open during these hours: 

  • 7:15 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday

  • 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Saturday 
WEST ALLIS COMMUNITY SPRING CLEAN UP MAY 14 

Let’s team up to clean up! The West Allis Police Department is looking for volunteers to help clean up our City on Saturday, May 14 from 9 - 11:30 a.m.  Volunteers are asked to meet at the West Allis Police Department Substation at 9 a.m., 6900 W. National Ave, for a light breakfast. Volunteers under age 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult or legal guardian.  For more information, contact Lt. THE 2022 CHARITY GALA: EARLY BIRD PRICING ENDS SOON 

Can you believe March will be over in a week’s time? Don’t let the month pass you buy without getting your Early Bird Tickets to this year’s 2022 Charity Gala! Included in your discount ticket is a delicious dinner, unique West Allis desserts, exciting raffles, live music, and a must-see silent auction. The 2022 West Allis Community Improvement Foundation’s (WACIF) Community Charity Gala will be held on Sunday, April 24 from 5 - 9:30 p.m. at the Gage, 1139 S. 70th St in West Allis. This year’s beneficiary is Exploit No More and the operation of their Freedom House. Exploit No More provides community education and supportive services to survivors of sex trafficking.  

DON’T WAIT - GET YOUR CITY-ISSUED GARBAGE CART AT A DISCOUNT 

Did you know our City-issued garbage carts are on sale? Order now until May 31 to get 50% off the regular purchase price! Any home in West Allis that does not have a City-issued garbage cart must have one by June 1; and don’t worry, if you are one of these households, you were notified with a mailer on this change earlier this year.  

Choose the 96-gallon cart online when you purchase, and a note that you may have up to 2 garbage carts per household (you can have up to 2 recycling carts too, in case you were wondering). You can learn more, and purchase here: www.westalliswi.gov/garbagecart. The 96-gallon garbage cart is on sale for $29.  

Residents are encouraged to repurpose their old garbage carts whenever possible. Residents can also have their garbage carts recycled at the City Dump located at 6300 W. McGeoch Ave. If you purchase the cart online, there is an option on the form to have Public Works remove your old cart(s) for free when they deliver the new cart.
