Van Wanggaard, a Republican member of the Wisconsin State Senate representing the 21st district since 2015, has used his social media platform to comment on Milwaukee’s salary increases and legislative debates over abortion-related bills.
On September 25, 2025, Wanggaard drew attention to differences in pay raises for city employees and police officers in Milwaukee. He stated, “Since Milwaukee police officers last had a contract, the AVERAGE Milwaukee employee got a 31% salary bump. Milwaukee is offering police officers 9%.”
Later that day, he criticized local news coverage regarding recent city raises, posting on September 25, 2025: “If you read the @journalsentinel or watch @tmj4 you would have no idea that the city of Milwaukee gave our $143 MILLION in raises over the last two years. Don’t you think its newsworthy, @Vanessa_Swales?”
The following day, on September 26, 2025, Wanggaard addressed ongoing legislative debates about abortion definitions in Wisconsin. He wrote: “By promising to veto and oppose this bill, Governor Evers and Democrats are saying that they believe ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages that are removed should be considered abortion. I don’t. I support this bill.”
Wanggaard was elected to the Wisconsin State Senate in 2015 after succeeding John Lehman as representative of the state’s 21st Senate district.
