Van Wanggaard, a Republican member of the Wisconsin State Senate representing the 21st district since 2015, shared several posts on his Twitter account on August 28, 2025, addressing gun laws and recent legislative proposals regarding immigration.

In one post made at 13:51 UTC, Wanggaard listed various Minnesota gun regulations that he argued failed to prevent a recent tragedy. He wrote: “Among the ‘common sense gun laws’ Minnesota has that didn’t prevent this tragedy:

Universal background checks
Red Flag/ERPO
Secure Storage
Bump Stock Ban
Auto-switches
K-12 gun free
Open carry regulation
Ability to deny purchase
Waiting period”.

Later in the day at 16:22 UTC, Wanggaard commented on new legislative efforts by Wisconsin Democrats concerning immigration policy. He stated: “WI Democrats are doubling down on illegal immigration. Today, they unveiled 3 bills:

1 – Prohibiting ANY government official from assisting ICE in ANY WAY
2 – Having YOUR tax $$ pay for illegal immigration defense
3 – Banning ICE use of ANY publicly-owned facility in WI.”

In another post at 18:20 UTC, Wanggaard addressed ongoing discussions about gun laws and their effectiveness following recent events. He said: “We HAVE discussed this. And you & I both know none of these laws would have prevented yesterdays tragedy. Because like when we discussed four years ago, it didn’t prevent the tragedy in that state, either.

And I do know better than to politicize a tragedy. You apparently don’t.”

Wanggaard has served in the Wisconsin State Senate since being elected in 2015 after succeeding John Lehman as representative of the state’s 21st Senate district.
