In early 2022, the manufacturing industry faced significant challenges due to an ongoing labor shortage. By October 2021, employment had decreased by over 350,000 workers compared to pre-pandemic levels. This shortage of high-quality workers has increased the risk of injuries, product liability issues, and damages for businesses.

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these issues as many manufacturing jobs occur indoors in close quarters, leading to employee turnover. However, the pandemic is not the sole cause of workforce shortages; retirements among baby boomers have also impacted the industry. Many younger workers have transitioned to fields like technology and healthcare, leaving a gap in manufacturing positions.

Manufacturers are dealing with various staffing challenges without clear solutions. Some firms report that vaccination requirements contribute to higher turnover rates, while others see minimal impact from such mandates. Additionally, childcare interruptions have forced some parents out of work, and concerns about safety and burnout during the pandemic have led other employees to leave their jobs.

Despite these difficulties, manufacturing is evolving with advanced technology such as co-bots that enhance productivity and safety by working alongside human employees. This technological shift requires higher education levels and new skills from factory floor workers and office staff alike, creating barriers for those lacking proper training or preparation.

Innovative companies like Allis Roller are finding creative solutions to address current challenges in the industry. "There is no magic wand solution but it takes hard work and a rededication to the local community to find qualified employees and recruit them when interested," stated Allis Roller representatives. The company has partnered with MATC in promoting manufacturing as a career path in efforts to close the hiring gap gradually.
