South Milwaukee/St. Francis Health Department Launches New Breastfeeding Initiative
The South Milwaukee/St. Francis Health Department is pleased to announce the creation of a free lactation support program. With certified lactation consultants now on-site, residents have access to a variety of services, including:
• Preparing for breastfeeding;
• Latch on difficulty;
• Milk supply concerns;
• Milk expression technique;
• Breast/chest feeding positioning;
• Concerns regarding soreness before, during, or after feeding; •
Problems with plugged ducts. The 2020 Wisconsin Statewide Health Assessment showed that Southeastern Wisconsin had the lowest breastfeeding rates in the state. Through community surveys, South Milwaukee and St. Francis residents indicated that they had an interest in breastfeeding services being offered by the Health Department.
As a part of this initiative, the department has been partnering with local businesses as they work to make their workplace more breastfeeding friendly through policy implementation and designation of a permanent lactation space.
The South Milwaukee Common Council has fully embraced this project and even updated the City of South Milwaukee’s Nursing Mothers Policy at their meeting on October 18, 2022. Said South Milwaukee Mayor Jim Shelenske: “This is a great program that provides an important service. The mothers of our community frequently prioritize the needs of others above their own.
I am proud that we can offer them this support through the South Milwaukee/St. Francis Health Department.” Said South Milwaukee/St. Francis Public Health Administrator Jacqueline Ove: “The Health Department is pleased to be able to offer lactation support services to our families who choose to breast feed. Our goal is to see every newborn thrive, and breast milk provides ideal nutrition for growth and development.”
Phone or in-person consults are available in the Health Department’s private Mother’s Room. Residents may call (414) 768-8055, ext. 3 for questions or to schedule an appointment.
